The Dutchies rocking the Rock!

Currently three top speed surfer from the Netherlands are enjoying classical Karpathos conditions on ‘the Rock’! – and rocking the speed strip in Afiartis and our scoreboard.

Among them also Twan Verseput returned to Greece to defined his title at the Odyssey of Speed. Already on his first day he scored great results and went right away to the top of the list. Two of his results are marking even ‘all-time-best’ in the history of our event: at 5×10 sec average he achieved 75,17 km/h and for the Alpha500 51,00 km/h.

With this results Twan his now leading in four out of our five categories and also leading the overall ranking. Still in 2nd place is Konstantinos Papandrikopoulos , followed by the second fastest greek sailor Minos Efstathidis and Eric Groot van Ederen (both with 28 points).

Greek Speedsurfing is back!

Due to the crisis situation worldwide also the Odyssey of Speed event has been impacted. But now, since beaches are open again the competition is picking up speed and some nice results have been uploaded. So the 10th edition of our event in 2020 is now on!

So it is time for the first intermediate ranking and give credit to those sailors already scoring GPS speeds.

With Konstantinos Papandrikopoulos the winner from 2018 is back in the race and with a new sail sponsor he took right away the overall lead. In 2nd position one of our most active participants since years Ilias Tsekouras (great!) , followed by the greek speed legend Minos Efstathidis.

Very remarkable is also the best 1 Hour result scored by Sofia Koukouzeli with a distance 36,46 km.

Twan Verseput, the current Speed Surfing World Champion, had a very windy week on the island of Karpathos with winds up to 40 knots. At the famous speed spot Twan was able to score excellent results in all our, five categories. With three first places and two in second place, he almost scored the optimum result!

By this he took the lead position from Eric and has a solid lead by 8 points. in third position is still Alex Petikidis, as the best listed greek speed surfer.

Now there just two weeks to go until the event ends on the 20th of September. Although it looks like a solid lead, with some good conditions the Greek speed elite might still be able to improve their scores!

Eric still leading – the World Champ is setting two marks!

Karpathos is still on fire and a couple of very good results have been posted. With Twan Verseput, the current Speed Surfing World Champion, we saw a very prominent entry joining the Odyssey! We are very happy and proud to see Twan competing in Greece and bringing our event to the next level!

Already on his first day he smashed two best scores, for the 1 Hour avg. (Cat.4) and the Alpha Racing 500 (Cat.5). With 25,96 Nm (48,08 km) for the 1 Hour, and 48,27 km/h for the Alpha he is now leading these two disciplines. Will be interesting to see what Twan will be able to score in the ‘classical’ speed disciplines, when he will encounter real Karpathos conditions?!

However the overall scoreboard is unchanged for the top three: Eric Groot van Ederen is still keeping his solid lead now by 13,4 points ahead of Alex Petikidis and Tim Otte. Catching up are Vladan Desnica on 5th place, and of course Twan currently with just two sessions already on position ten.

The current world champion in speedsurfing Twan Verseput is currently showing his class on Karpathos. Scoring recently excellent results already in the more slalom-oriented disciplines, such as 1Hour and Alpha racing, today he achieved also very good results in the ‘classical’ speed disciplines. In conditions typical for Karpathos with winds up to 40 knots Twan was using a 6.2 sail and a 63 wide slalom board.

With 78,83km/h in 2sec. Max speed and 72,69 km/h in 5x10sec average speed Twan is now in 2nd place in this two categories.

Overall Twan concquered the lead now from Eric Groot van Ederen. Detailed ranking will follow soon.

One Hour and Alpha Racing are Key to Success!

Although no big changes in the Top Three, below within the Top Ten a lot of changes occurred. Christian Bornemann, one of the fastest wind surfers in Germany, climbing up the score board up to fifth place now with some nice results for the 1Hour and Alpha Racing.

Anyway the two categories for 1 Hour avg. (Cat.4) and Alpha Racing 500 (Cat.5) appear also this year to be the discriminators for the overall ranking. These two disciplines are making the difference for our event as such and for its participants. By this also days with average wind speed can be challenging to score good results for the overall ranking.

Nevertheless Eric Groot van Ederen is still keeping his solid lead by 8,6 points ahead of Alex Petikidis and Tim Otte.

At the famous spot in the Devils Bay in Karpathos, where several times the world championship in speed windsurfing took place, the new windsurfing station called Meltemi Windsurfing Karpathos is situated.

On the ground of the former Pro Center of Chris Schill the entire windsurf station has been rebuilt. Nice and spacious storage area are combined with chill out areas offering the nice view over the bay and the action on the water.

The station is equipped with 150 boards, from Fanatic and Tabou at various sizes and 300 sails ranging from 3.0 to 7.2 sqm. The sails are either from Gaastra (Manic HD, Matrix) or Duotone (Super Hero, Super Session). More details about the equipment can be found under the link.

Safety is at highest priority and a bay watch tower, which is permanently serviced and a station-owned rescue board are ensuring this.

For people, who are bringing their own equipment, a dedicated storage area exists offering space for boards and rigged sails. Locker and change rooms together with a number of showers are completing the perfect infrastructure.

For refreshments a small snack bar is offering cold drinks and little snacks.

All-in-all the perfect place for anyone’s windsurfing holidays at all skill levels.
